Just thought I would share this cottage I found..I don’t remember where I found it and if you know please let me know so I can credit the image correctly.

One day when I am wealthy I will have a cottage by the sea somewhere purely for holidays and it shall be white..because by the time that happens the kids will be long gone and white and I can be friends again..the grass growing on the roof may be optional but that’s just more work to do.

a fifo wife {fifo life: a few things}

image with thanks to tumblr

It’s Sunday and I am writing my few things today…I hate pre writing but it’s a busy week infact it’s a busy start to the festive season. We have our thanks giving on Wednesday yes I know it’s an American Tradition but it was started by the English in Henry the 8ths realm (don’t quote me on that) and well I think it’s just beautiful tradition to stop and be grateful to those we love in our lives. It should be everyday but you know life gets busy but to have one day which ever you choose is lovely.

So from today we have school Christmas parties and this year we are doing a Christmas party of our own for the kids.

But in the mean time here are few things running through my head.

  1. My friend Ruth is home from getting treatment south words cannot describe how thankful I am to have her home
  2. Walked into a home the other day and it was so clean…I was scared to let my kids stay…I swear I could see my reflection in the floors…
  3. Can’t wait for school to be over for the year…I’m so over the morning routine…
  4. Don’t want to rub it in but have my school book list order in all ready for next year…determined…to…be…more…organised.
  5. Being born without a vagina is not rare…1:4500 girls are born without one read more here.
  6. I posted this on my face book page over the weekend…but wanted my emailer’s to see it to…it’s one of the reasons why I love having boys…head here.
  7. I am going to make this well try at least.
  8. If you like history you will love these.
  9. How to make a failsafe to-do list here
  10. Even this had me crossing my legs…I wonder if he got his message through?

Have a sweet day everyone…

Since I wrote about how to work at home yesterday I thought I would show you were I work from when I am at home. This was an ordinary bedroom turned office and my husband has done a pretty good job in making it beautiful.

Being an old home and having no in built cupboards (but 14 ft ceilings) he created a loft for so all our extra ‘stuff’ can  be stored. It also doubles as our guest room when we need it and so the sofa is one of the pull out variety.

As you can see it’s full of ‘stuff’ but I love every single thing in here…and they have all been found on treasure hunts…or given to me with love.

The framed drawing is of my Josie who takes pride of place on the sofa and is now forever etched in pencil by a family friend. They are images of what she would do if she was the little dog that could.

The suit cases are my boy’s memory boxes and what you can’t see is my rack of vintage dresses some worn others will never be able to. The purple gown a gift for the baby girl we never had. My husband brought it on in the markets on his last deployment in the Middle East. The embroidery is far too fine to give away…perhaps a grand-daughter one day. The scissors my husband’s grandmothers while the masks are from our trip to Europe and a bottle of my favourite perfume.

Hoarder is such a harsh word when compared to collector…I’m a collector of old things.

So that’s my ‘creative space’ as someone once called it…care to show me yours?

a fifo wife {fifo life: how to: work from home}

I struggle with working from home really do I procrastinate terribly. However the reality is along with being a stay at home mum wife to a FIFO husband I am also a writer and a vintage store owner. I have a lot that is meant to be done but I’m easily distracted by other jobs such as my children, keeping house, my four dogs, one cat, and enough chickens to be classed as poultry farm.

However I have learnt a thing or two about working from home these past months so whether it be working or doing the house finances here is a how to:

  1. Make a plan. Write your work list in a work list diary and home jobs in a home diary keep them separate. They are two different things.
  2. Have an office where you can keep the door closed. You can leave your office your day behind when it’s done. If you don’t have a the luxury have a space even a table in the hall that you can tidy at the end of the day, turn off the laptop, slide in the chair and resume being mum instead of small business owner.
  3. Don’t work from your bed. Don’t. It’s a place to do other things such as sleep and sometimes sex…sex shouldn’t be resigned to just the bed but thats another how to..
  4. Get dressed for a day at the office. Gets you in the right frame of mind.
  5. Have meal and coffee breaks just like you would if worked a ‘real job’.
  6. If you have kids at home bribe them not to disturb you for an hour and then you will play Thomas the tank with them before returning back…alternate between the TV babysitting, toy, reading and colouring- I never said it was easy or that I am perfect.
  7. Don’t forget to network outside the home…join the local business group just to maintain contact with the outside world. It stops you from becoming a complete hermit and the inter net being the only way you see the outside world.
  8. Don’t turn on face book it’s a productivity killer. Trust me.
  9. Have a knock off time and switch it all off…well at least until the kids go to bed and then your back to work because you love it that much…and no that not sarcasm.
  10. Enjoy it. It’s why you work at home

And no that’s not me (of course) my office is a little more creatively messy than that. Image is from here.

I was asked to take part in the ABC Mining Life Project (you can read my blog about why I started my blog here).

ABC Mining Life is all about sharing your story about the boom and how it affects you and yours. Whether or a FIFO worker, wife of one, sister, mother brother, hotel worker, or nurse in a town affected by the boom they we want to hear your story. And it doesn’t have to be the now it can be the past or beyond that.

It’s capturing Australia’s history for all to read for ever after.

Currently I am loving the instagram images and other contributors such as the girls over mining women support group, Sharon Payne  and the videos from the ABC Open Producers such a great idea.

I love seeing these little glimpses into the lives of men and women on site.

Make sure you get on over and have a look and if you like you can follow them too.

Among my favourites and who the above image credits are from are here , here, and here.

If you would like to get involved about “Digging the dirt on the daily lives behind the boom. Share a photo or write a story about how mining affects your life”. Head here.
