the fifo wife {long distance relationship pillow}

So we all know that the nights are the loneliest part of this fifo gig. So today I saw this on one of my favourite bloggies. A Scottish designer Joanna Montgomery has designed a a pillow for couples in long distance relationships. NO,  it doesn’t help with the dishes and put the kids to bed instead each person wears a ring sensor to sleep at night. When one person goes to bed, their partners pillow begins to glow softly and you can hear each others heart beating! This would I think be great for the kids especially those not coping so well with daddy being away.

Have a great Friday my friends

the fifo wife {orgainising: family meals}

You know the craziest times are the day are both the morning school time rush and dinner time. Dinner time unless you are organised is

Dinner time unless you are organised is arsenic or witching hour. The kids and babies are cranky they just want to eat shower and fall into bed; much like mum understandbly. In most families there is husband to help but in ours there is just me, so we have a meal plan. It makes the major meal (dinner) so much easier. In most families there is husband to help but in ours there is just me, so we have a meal plan. It makes the major meal (dinner) so much easier. There is less stress, its cost effective and budget friendly and the kids can get involved. You can plan as far in advance as you like, me I do it every Tuesday night just for the week. This is just the night before I do the family shop and I only spend a short amount of time (15mins) deciding what to cook. I take into consideration the days events ie the boys have swimming Thursdays so it has to be quick and on Mondays when husband is home he has volunteer fire brigade so we eat even earlier, my dinner choices are reflective of this but I’m always flexible you have to be.

I don’t specifically have a meal planner as I have a family planner that I have parked in the kitchen (its a pen paper thing..I love the romance of pen and paper) but there are plenty of good ones you can down load off the net. I also start the prep of dinner early in the morning when the boys are still in bed and finish it off just before dinner. My dinner plans fairly much run like this:

Monday-       pasta night.

Tuesday-       we have take away (I’m guilty to that)

Wednesday- meat and veges

Thursday-    rice dish with meat and vege of some sort.

Friday-         Pizza (homemade) with salad’s

Saturday-    leftovers who wants to cook on a Saturday night.

Sunday-       meat and vege.

When I shop I stick to the list and I shop bulk at the food wholesalers (although this is not always the cheaper option). I’m yet to try online as this has only just come to our area but I think that in doing that you can budget better, and I like to keep my meals simple with lots of fresh veg. I grow what veg I can and when I can will by direct from the farmers; I am so fortunate to live in a farming area. I also avoid shopping with the boys and when I’m hungry…otherwise I have a tendency to buy what I feel like for lunch. Well my friends I hope thats helpful

the fifo wife daily {fun with cardboard}

Cardboard fun

Introducing the B1, B2, B3 I always vowed that I would never allow my boys on the web but here they are, guess I just wanted to show you that we are indeed real and we do indeed do these things. This was last week when the weather was scorching and we needed to have some inside time because it was just so damn hot outside.

So my boys and I got busy making things from the cardboard boxes that some stock had just arrived in ( if this inspires you however your local convenience store or pantry can help?) We made a dinosaur car, cars and jet packs this particular day. In the past they have made trains and rocket ships. They can go mad painting, pasting and drawing. Its imaginative and crafty (something I’m not particularly good at), you only need some boxes and tape at the very least and it keeps them busy for a good few hours and out of my hair; once all the cutting is done that is.

Today is quite the opposite to last week’s scorcher its a cool miserable raining day so I imagine the boxes will be getting a work out once again. Here’s a link for some more inspiring cardboard fun..

the fifo wife daily {halloween- disaster}

Okay so my eldest B1 wanted to go trick or treating. Its an American tradition I tried to explain. I don’t do Halloween and neither does daddy. B1 was not happy. All the other S are going to a Halloween party and they are having a dressed up house he whinged as he went to school yesterday. I was going not going to go trick or treating I was standing firm but perhaps I could do a special treat. I let them stay up and watch shrekless whilst I whipped up some spooky cupcakes. I thought it would be fabulous I thought I would reign supreme…ah nup. B1 and B2 where scared shrekless of the Shrek Halloween special on the Tv running back and forth to the kitchen and my cupcakes well as I’m not a baker (despite it being a very yummy Donna hay cupcake mix) they where a disaster. B1 knew this he could tell, he is going to be the cook out of his brothers but the other two licked and munched their way through my very undercooked cupcakes. It was a hilarious effort however as I tucked babies into bed B2 whispered in my ear that was the best Halloween ever.

the fifo wife daily {today I believe I may just be superwoman}

Today (well yesterday) I truly believed I was, am, superwoman and asupermum. I some how managed to get all done. Mowed lawns, washed, cleaned, took the boys out for a boat trip and made a nutritious dinner. I was on fire. I was so damn proud of myself when I fell into bed last night. I’m not sure how it happened it doesnt happen often but I feel like I’m invincible. Yeah ha baby. Bring on Monday. I can do anything.
