Its been so hot but thats summer for you huh? We are only six days in and oh my god its hot. Here its horribly humid until three o’clock; its almost like clock work and then bam it rains. NO it pours. Occassionally theres thunder and lightening but so far this spring/summer we havent had any thunder storms. Just torrential rain. Its perfect for playing boats in. Im the only parent in the street to get out and play (more like watch and listen for cars and thunder and lightening) in the street and I love it. I get so much joy from watching my boys play in the overflowing gutters just as I did when I was their age. They are so happy running around in the rain. Laughing and splashing. Chasing their leaves; boats, in the rain. Watching them play I get that contented loved up feeling Im always chasing.
How long since you have played in the rain?

Christmas school holidays. Its that time of year when we all get into the car/plane and head of to the rellies. This year the FIFO husband is taking the kids across to Nana and Poppa’s so I can have a little rest. Everyone is so looking forward to it. They leave this Saturday and are heading off to Darwin. From here its juts a two and half hour flight. I have done it many many times before with the boys on my own. Its all part of being a FIFO wife travelling alone iwth the kids is just one more thing we have to learn to do on our own. I have been travelling solo domestically and international with the kids since B1 was six weeks old. It can be stressful but going any where with kids is stressful but as long as you are organised and keep things relatively simple it can makes things so much easier.
Here is a couple of things I have learnt when travelling solo with three kids under five.
Buy/make a travel wallet to keep EVERYTHING you need in one place. One of those plastic envelopes are fantastic. They are large, easy to grab with one hand and keeps everything together.
Along with travelling with usual travel bag for kiddies, travel with a small medicine kit include things such as panadol, phenergan a great over the counter for nausea and allergy, band aids anti bacterial hand wash etc
Avoid trigger foods (things that make them slightly hyper) before travel. For my kids its soft drink and anything orange.
If you are travelling via plane let them have a supervised run in the terminal. Don’t let them behave like monkeys but my kids play quietly playing Ben 10 ducking behind chairs and poles. They aren’t loud, screaming or running just burning off excess excited energy. If its by car stop at a park and let them run themselves ragged.
Pack plenty of toys but give them one at a time, when they look like they are getting bored swap it. Make sure each child has one of their own to avoid fighting.
Play family games such as I spy or look at purchasing some card travel games such as these.
If travelling by plane make a request at check in or with your travel agent for a bassinet for babies or to be over the bulk head so the kids can have a little place to play.
As crazy as this sounds try and keep their routine going even when travelling especially at night. If you are travelling at night pack their pyjama’s and change them settle them with a story or a milk whatever your routine. It will help them settle them into sleep.
When I travelled with boys as babies I always gave them a breast feed or bottle during take off and landing it just helped with the ear popping. If they did cry and wouldn’t take a drink I just let them its the best thing to do. Don’t worry to much about the other passengers most will understand those that don’t well do your best to ignore them.
Oh and I know that this will sound terrible but label the kids with a wrist band, nothing worse than losing a child in a busy terminal when your flights boarding..
So those are my tips to the FIFO husband. Hope they are helpful for you too,

No pic because its just a quick note because its the lazy/crazy day of boxing day for us here celebrating our fifo christmas but I wanted to checkin and tell you how Christmas went.
Christmas was fantastic. The family sleep over went with out a hitch and the boys were in heaven. Santa came and went and even left a boot behind. I got nothing on my list fifo husband winged and Im so happy with what I got, fifo husband got everything on his and the fifo boys recieved more dinosaurs than what was discovered in juarrasic park.
Breakfast was fantastic. All our favourite people where there and lunch well went to the dam and we skiied until we where not allowed to ski anymore. It really was a fantastic day.
Im so thankful for everything I have and evrything I have learnt this year.
Merry Christmas

I was reading a post today from Katrina from the block and her toliet delimma’s and so I left her a comment about my great little find and so I thought I would share it with you. So lets talk about wee. More specifically boys and wee. They are so hard to train to get their business into the toliet, especially when they progress from sitting to standing. It has driven me crazy. So imagine my crazy delight when my mother put me on to the wee target. My mother used them when she was looking after 14 men at a road side camp she said they worked a treat for her…boys/ men they really dont grow up do they?
The wee target is a little heat senstive stick that sticks to the back of the toliet and changes colour when they hit it. They have differnt motif’s cars, trucks, bullseyes. They are a bit pricey at $5.00 each however thet last three to six weeks but they are great as an intial training tool. I will admitt that they still have to mop up the occassional spill but its so much better than it was. The best training tool I have found however is that they have to clean up their OWN mess its afterall they made it and Im not going to be around for ever to clean up their mess and I pity the poor woman taking them on. Yet having said that for our next reno Im having a toliet all of my own. Thats right a speciall toliet just for me..
