a fifo wife {interiors: Melbourne Home – Barbara Hyman and Family}

Love finding Australian Design stories. This is the home of Babara Hyman and her family in Princes Park Melbourne.

Barbara has filled her home with a mix of antiques and simple contemporary furniture, beautiful warm-toned rugs and treasured artwork. ‘Everything has a story around it’ says Barbara. ‘The carpet under the dining table is a very special memory of my 40th birthday trip to Morocco with a friend’.  Likewise, Barbara has a special fondness for the pool tiles (pictured at the bottom of this post).  After seeing these particular tiles in  a photograph of her sister in law on holiday in Italy (‘at some groovy hotel pool in Ravello!’ she says) – Barbara tracked them down and found someone locally who could import them. Go here for the full interview.

a fifo wife {a fifo life: real life: third wheels}

FIFO husband and has been home two nights. Last night he decided not to do bedtime and go to fire brigade, early. The FIFO boys were needless to say where somewhat disappointed.

When he returned home the boys were asleep. He went to check on them, laid with them while they slept and then came out to see me. Where they okay that I left he said…yep didn’t even notice I said trying not to show I was ticked off that he choose a catch up with his mates over bed time with his boys.

Oh well I am just a third wheel he said. What? I said. He repeated like I hadn’t heard and he hadn’t heard the sarcasm in my voice. He has said this crap once before and well I just can’t be bothered with it. I’m never sure if it’s a guilt trip for my benefit or not. I’m not sure and quite frankly I don’t care.

I need a word I said to him. It was bed time for me and I don’t sleep well on a cranky stomach.

What he said…like he didn’t freaking know.

Third wheel? Is that how you feel? Yes I do he said without blinking.

Well this is our reality. Unmake yourself a third wheel or quite simply we sell everything and go back to living like Joe blow down the road which we have never done but if you really feel like a third wheel let’s give it ago shall we?

We can’t do that he said. Why not I ask? I can’t listen to that type of crap every other month I said. It doesn’t sit well with me.

Because we can’t. You would have to go back to work and who would look after the kids? We couldn’t have what we have if I didn’t work away.

Exactly. You want it as much as I do so let’s just drop the crap, suck it up and get on with it.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone else?

Xx Deb

Ps. wear sunscreen girls and plenty of it..

a fifo wife {recipes: apple gravy}

Husband introudced me to apple gravy awhile ago and after just having a quick pork chop dinner I had to share. Have you tried it. Perhaps Im the last to know? Its basically apple added to the gravy when you have roast pork. So nice. We have had it with chicken as well and its equally nice.

Now you know the rules with my recipes this is all guess work…my measurements that is becuase I dont measure I taste.

Ingredients

  • 2  apples, cored and cut into 1cm (½in) cubes
  • finley sliced onion
  • crushed garlic one
  • Few fresh thyme sprigs, plus extra leaves to garnish
  • 30 mls plain flour
  • 100mls appl juice/puree
  • 275mls stock
  • ½tsp sugar, optional

How to:

  1. Once your roast has finished roasting put the pork belly roasting tin over a medium heat.  There shouldn’t be any burnt bits in the tin – if there are, scrape them out and discard. Add apple, garlic, onion and thyme. Fry for 1min, then stir in flour  and cook for 1min. Gradually stir in apple juice/puree, then stock.
  2. Heat, stirring constantly, until gravy thickens, then leave to bubble for a  few minutes. Discard thyme sprigs. Pour into a warmed jug and check seasoning. If it tastes a little sharp, stir in the sugar. Sprinkle in  some fresh thyme leaves and serve with the pork.

Hope that you had a great monday my friends,

xx Deb..
